Families with young children are the future lifeblood of TBT, and synagogues everywhere. Parents with their children, from newborns through teenagers, energize our congregation, offer fresh perspectives and broaden our outlook. Not to mention that temple members delight in babies cooing at services, little ones playing at holiday events, and teenagers doing good for themselves and their community.
Family Holiday Celebrations
At TBT, our Jewish holiday gatherings are casual, creative, and family-friendly! Your kids will love taking part in our impromptu Passover play, complete with costumes, scenery and the parting of the Red Sea. Maybe they’ll find the afikomen and win an ice-cream date with Rabbi Hershenson! At our Shevlin Park summer Shabbat picnic, they’ll chase new friends through the woods, and at our Pioneer Park Tashlich on Rosh Hashanah, they might build a boat out of sticks and float it down the river. Our Hanukkah latke-fests are a big draw for all ages and a wonderful opportunity to meet our families. Join us!
Are you a parent of at least one child from infants through grade 4? If so, come join us for our monthly Tot Shabbats that parents take turns hosting. It’s lovely to gather in a cozy home where adults and children mix and mingle, talk and play, creating even stronger friendships. We gather together to celebrate Shabbat, our children, and the amazing community of Jewish families in Central Oregon. We share our personal traditions, learn new traditions, laugh, tell stories, sing and get to know one another. It’s a potluck so we always eat amazing food from home baked challah to lasagna to vegetable stews.
If you’d like to be added to the Invitation e-mail list, please contact our Tot Shabbat coordinator, Jessica Hammerman at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Community Religious Education Program
Temple Beth Tikvah, in cooperation with all of the Jewish communities in Bend, offers a Community Religious Education program for the Jewish children of Central Oregon. We are a coalition of parents and teachers aligned to provide a rich and transformative Jewish and Hebrew education for the children in our congregations.
If you are interested in enrolling your child in Religious School or Hebrew School, contact our Religious Education Director, Sara Jo Slate at email@example.com.

Teen Youth Groups
In the small communities of Central Oregon, it is vitally important to expose our youth to a larger circle of Jewish peers. All Central Oregon middle and high schoolers, regardless of temple affiliation, are welcome to join our local BBYO chapter (grades 9 – 12), associated with the national organization, and our own Central Oregon Jewish Youth (COJY) for grades 6 – 8. These two groups provide opportunities for our young people to interact with Jewish kids locally, in Portland and other cities. While they may be a small minority here, we want our kids to benefit from seeing vibrant Jewish communities in the region and across the country.
